Turkey is surrounded by four seas, which are rich in diversity of fish species, on three sides The Black Sea in the north, The Marmara Sea in the Northwest, the Aegean in the West and the Mediterranean in the South. The inland resources are also very rich (175 km. rivers, 1 million ha natural lakes, 170 000 ha reservoirs, 70 000 ha lagoons, 700 small reservoirs). Turkey has 8.333 km. of coast line and is located on two continents, namely; Asia and Europe. Owing to its geographical location, Turkey has a major advantage and great potential in terms of fish and fishery products and production area of seafood is over 26 million hectares.
Total annual fishery production of Turkey is approximately 800.000 tons, including fresh water production. In ten years’ period, farming-based production increased its share to a great extent against fishing based production of seafood. While the share of the production through culture fish was 1% in the total production of seafood in 1990, it reached 18% in 2007. Fish farms cultivate especially sea bass, gilt head bream, rainbow trout and bluefin tuna. The current fish farms are particularly located in the Aegean region and their numbers have been increased in the past years, leading to a production surplus that cause rise in the exports of Turkish fishery products. Approximately %80 of Turkey’ fish production consists of migratory species. Anchovy, horse mackerel, gray mullet, Atlantic bonito, blufish are important economic species in the Black Sea; European pilchard, gray mullet in the Mediterranean; European pilchard in the Aegean Sea and anchovy, horse mackerel, gray mullet in the sea of Marmara. Of those fish living on the sea bottom, such species as turbot, whiting stand out in the Black Sea; gilthead sea bream, red mullet, European hake and European barracuda in the Aegean Sea and Mediterranean.
The following species are basically produced in Turkey: European sea bass, gilthead sea bream, rainbow trout, blufin tuna. In addition, meagre, white grouper, shi drum, common dentex, sheephead sea bream, brown meagre, common sea bream, white sea bream, red banded sea bream, mussel and shrimp are also grown.
The foreign trade of the fish and fishery products sector runs a surplus. In this respect, the fisheries sector could have been considered as a source of production and export for Turkey. The main export markets of Turkish fishery products are the European Union, Japan and the USA. Due to the convenient natural structure of surrounding environment including seas and inland water sources for aquaculture, it seems that Turkey will continue to achieve considerable development in this area in the upcoming years.
Turkish Aquaculture facilities are using the most modern systems of the world. The fishery sector has completely adapted to EC norms years ago. Then, EC has reported that Turkish companies were taken to the list of third countries from where EU countries can import fish.
In addition to expansion of fishery sector by production and production area, the geographical advantages of Turkey, three seas surrounding her, diversity of species, processing capacity, trade relations with the European and Middle East countries, tendency to enter the new markets and her closeness to target markets in the region are the facts that promise steady growth for the fishery sector of Turkey.
